Quail Breeds
Knowing your birds
Coturnix (Japanese)
The homestead workhorse. Fast to mature, calm in a colony, and laying by seven weeks. Comes in dozens of color varieties from Pharaoh to Tuxedo to Celadon.
Celadon
A Coturnix line bred for pale blue-green eggs. Same care, extraordinary egg basket.
Bobwhite
A native North American quail. Slower growing, more flighty, and best suited to flight pens rather than colony housing.
Button (Chinese Painted)
Tiny and ornamental. Kept for their charm rather than eggs or meat — a joy to watch, not a production bird.
